They met years ago but ran into each other at sunset. John likes to say it elicited an actual applause from the people in that pocket park in Brooklyn watching it set over the East River. She took a blurry photo on her phone of the sky and then they exchanged numbers. She texted him later that night and he jumped off the bus and met up with her. Their first date started at 11pm. Showing up to watch that sunset changed their lives, so that mentality of showing up for life’s beauty and letting it surprise them has become a mantra of sorts. When it came to their design, they leaned into these moments of simple beauty and sunset colors - from a balloon installation overhead to lounge furniture surrounding their ceremony in the round to on-site poets delivering haikus to their guests. The November day was chilly but intimate and cozy inside. In lieu of a favor table, they asked their guests to pause and design cards for kids spending the holidays in the hospital. To close out the ceremony, Amy’s sister sang an original song about how impossible and perfect it was that they both decided to watch a sunset one day and it changed their lives. A gorgeous homage to a lifetime kind of love that ended with a crepe station and a Shania Twain sing-a-long. Is there anything better?
